Death of Mrs. C.F. Braine (Adeline Mary Becher), great grandmother

THE LATE MRS. C.F. BRAINE

The late Mrs. C.F. Braine, whose death at the Albert Hospital, London, we recorded yesterday, was, for a good many years, a well-known resident of Nuwara Eliya, and will be greatly missed by a host of friends at the United Club. She was the daughter of the Rev. J.Y. Becher and married Mr. C.F. Braine, who was for many years in charge of Manikwatte Estate, Dikoya, and who died in hospital in March, 1896, as the result of a fall from his horse. There are four children--Mr. C.S. Braine, now in charge of Mawatte estate, Negombo; Mrs. Combe, wife of Mr. L.H. Combe, of Messers. Boustead Bros; Mr. W. B. Braine, of Yataderiya estate, Kelani Valley; and Miss Muriel Braine, who went home with her mother last August, and who is now in England

It was very interesting reading about your great grandparents and I can add a little more detail for you as, like you, I am also connected to the Becher family tree. Adeline Mary Becher was the 4th child and third daughter of the Rev. James Young Becher BA (1814-1897) and his first wife Mary Read. She was born on 20th October 1849 at Prince of Wales Island, Bengal.

Her father was educated at Sherborne School and left in 1833. Amongst other things, he etched his name on his school desk and there are pictures of it online. He was admitted to Worcester College, Oxford and matriculated on 5th Dec 1833 and gained his degree 1837; became a Deacon in 1838 and a Priest in 1839. He arrived in India aboard the Hotspur with his wife and three children in 1853 and became a Chaplain at Meerut. However, he became seriously ill and was ordered to the Cape for respite. When he returned he became Chaplain at Cuttack but not long after he decided to return home and became Garrison Chaplain at St Helier, Jersey and then Curate at Studley, Trowbridge and by 1868 he and his family were living at Norland Square, Notting Hill, London where he died in 1897. He appears in a group family portrait with his parents and siblings.

I do not know how Adeline met your grandfather but they married on 9th April 1874 at Kensington, London. As you probably know, he was born in Taunton, Somerset. In the 1881 Census he was recorded as living at 18 Tower Buildings, South Wapping, London and working at a Clerk of Wharf.

I hope that's of interest.

Thanks, Alistair, for writing.

As I wrote in another post, great grandpa arrived in Ceylon in 1869 (according to his obituary) and passed away in 1896. He appears to have been accident prone, and also developed malaria. I wonder how he could have been in London in 1881 when he was a tea planter in Ceylon. Perhaps he had a house there.

I am researching my great-great grandfather, Charles Joseph Braine, who came to Ceylon as a coffee planter. He had been earlier in Hong Kong, where I also lived for about 20 years, till 2015.
